Head Band Director
Joshua Schechter received his Bachelor of Music Education degree from Texas Christian University graduating Cum Laude, in May of 2004.
Mr. Schechter began his teaching career in Plano ISD teaching at Plano West Senior High School. After teaching for a year at Plano West, Mr. Schechter came to Smithfield Middle School where he is in his twelfth year.
Mr. Schechter started playing the clarinet in sixth grade at Joshua ISD in Joshua, Texas. While at TCU, he doubled on baritone saxophone and tenor saxophone in the TCU T-TH Jazz Band, performed in the TCU Wind Ensemble, served as president of Phi Mu Alpha Sinfonia, and served as Drum Major of the TCU Marching Band. Mr. Shechter is a member of Texas Music Educators Association and Texas Bandmasters Association
Mr. Schechter enjoys spending time with his wife and twin boys, teaching music, volunteering at church, playing hockey, fishing, and camping.
Associate Band Director
Katherine Morris attended Texas Tech University and received a Bachelor’s degree in Music Education. While at Texas Tech, Ms. Morris performed in the Lubbock Symphony Orchestra under the direction of David Cho, the Texas Tech University Symphony Orchestra under the direction of David Becker and the Texas Tech Symphonic Wind Ensemble under the direction of Dr. Sarah McKoin. Earlier this year, she had the honor of performing with the Symphonic Wind Ensemble at the Texas Music Educators Association Convention. Ms. Morris was also a member of the Goin’ Band from Raiderland. In addition to these ensembles, she studied horn with Christopher M. Smith and taught private lessons and master classes throughout Lubbock ISD.
Prior to her appointment at Smithfield Middle School, Ms. Morris student taught in Leander ISD under the mentorship of Bryan Christian (Vista Ridge High School) and Robert Herrings (Artie Henry Middle School). During this time, she was also a member of the Cedar Park Winds under the direction of Christopher Yee, and she played on the recording that earned the group an invitation to perform at the Midwest Clinic later this year.
Ms. Morris’s professional affiliations include the Texas Music Educators Association and the Texas Bandmaster’s Association.
In her free time, Ms. Morris enjoys cooking, being active and hanging out with friends. She is excited to begin teaching with the outstanding staff at Smithfield Middle School and Birdville High School, and to work with the students and families that make the program so great!
James Figueredo is the Percussion Director for the Birdville High School band in North Richland Hills, Texas. Mr. Figueredo oversees all aspects of the percussion programs for Birdville HS, Richland MS, and Smithfield MS.
Before coming to Birdville ISD, Mr. Figueredo served as the Percussion Director for the Fowler Middle School band in Frisco ISD, as well as the Assistant Percussion Director at Liberty High School. During his tenure with the Fowler band, he conducted the Fowler MS Percussion Ensemble, which won the Percussive Arts Society International Convention’s 2015 Junior High Percussion Ensemble Competition. He also taught private lessons to the percussionists at Vandeventer Middle School.
Prior to teaching in Frisco, Mr. Figueredo also taught in Lewisville ISD for the highly acclaimed Marcus High School band from 2010 to 2013. He assisted on the field for two of the Marcus band’s 5A UIL State Marching Championships, the PASIC “Call For Tapes” showcase concert in 2011, and the 2012 PASIC Marching Festival Championship. He also taught private lessons and clinics for Lewisville ISD, Richardson ISD and Carrollton-Farmers Branch ISD.
Mr. Figueredo earned his Bachelor of Music Education degree from the University of North Texas. While at UNT, he performed with the Indoor Drumline, winning the PASIC Marching Festival Championship in 2008. He also performed with various UNT ensembles such as the Latin Jazz Lab Band, Afro-Cuban, Brazilian, Gamelan, Steel Band, Percussion Ensemble, Symphonic Band, Concert Band, and the Green Brigade Marching Band. His teachers included Mark Ford, Paul Rennick, Jose Aponte, Christopher Deane, Mike Drake, and Ed Smith.
Mr. Figueredo has been no stranger to the marching music and arts. From 2009 to 2010, he was an original member of the Dallas Cowboys Rhythm & Blue Drumline. In addition, he performed with the 2008 DCI World Champion Phantom Regiment Drum & Bugle Corps and earned the Fred Sanford High Percussion Award. He also performed with the 2007 Boston Crusaders Drum & Bugle Corps.
Mr. Figueredo is a member of the Percussive Arts Society, Texas Music Educators Association and is an endorser of Innovative Percussion Sticks and Mallets. He is happily married to his wife, Noel Figueredo, who is the AVID Coordinator for Lewisville High School Harmon in the Lewisville Independent School District.
